The Museum Mile Festival 2011

One day a year, for the past 32 years, nine of the country’s finest museums, all ones that call Fifth Avenue home, collectively open their doors from 6pm – 9pm for free to New Yorkers and visitors for a mile-long block party and visual art celebration. This traffic-free, music- and art-filled celebration fills the street and sidewalks of Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th street, the mile now officially designated as Museum Mile. Over 50,000 visitors attend the festival annually.

Despite the still-sour economy, many New York City museums, zoos and gardens continue to offer free admission at least a few hours each week.

PS1 MOMA LONG ISLAND CITY
P.S. 1 is an internationally renowned museum devoted to contemporary art. It is known for its avant-garde exhibits and for leading the alternative space movement. Artists collaborate with the administrators, and some have studio space on site. P.S. 1 is affiliated with MoMA, but has a much looser, crazier feel.

Discover Queens (Part 2) – Graffiti Mecca in NYC

5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc. is an outdoor art exhibit space in Long Island City, New York, considered to be the world’s premiere “graffiti Mecca,” where aerosol artists from around the globe paint colorful pieces on the walls of a 200,000-square-foot factory building.

The name 5Pointz signifies the five boroughs coming together as one but, because of its reputation as an epicenter of the graffiti scene, the industrial complex has actually united aerosol artists from across the world. Legendary writers from Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, and all over the United States have painted on the building walls, including Stay High 149, Tracy 168, Cope2, Part, and Tats Cru. Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum

During the decade before the Revolutionary War, the Georgian house, with its monumental portico and octagonal drawing room, was the setting for some of the colony’s most fashionable parties.

In the fall of 1776, the Mansion was seized by the Continental Army and served as headquarters for George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights. British and Hessian commanders occupied the house after Washington’s retreat from New York. Read the rest of this entry »
