ABOUT HARLEM JAZZ SHRINES FESTIVAL 2011

The Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage and Jazzmobile have partnered specifically to create a resurgence of jazz opportunities in Harlem with this week-long festival. Jazz will be presentedin all its various forms and diverse formats including jazz dance, concert, club, cabaret and dance events. Conceived as an annual offering, Harlem Jazz Shrines will enable the partners to create a dynamic range of programming, highlighting the role that local Harlem venues have played in the development of jazz.

Jazz in New York

Though New Orleans and Chicago are often hailed as America’s historic jazz capitals, New York City has a rich jazz history. After NYC adopted cabaret licenses in the 1920s, jazz gained momentum in the big city, flourishing in its dark taverns and small spotlights. The basements of NYC brownstones in particular, with their narrow entrances and subtle back alley exits, were ideal speakeasies and jazz hangouts during the prohibition.
