Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade 2011

Kayaking on the Hudson River

Enjoy NYC’s great outdoors while staying cool by paddling around on the Hudson River. On weekends, volunteer organization the Downtown Boathouse offers free river kayaking to the general public. Instructors provide the equipment and lessons; all you have to do is show up in a swimsuit or shorts and strap on a life vest. (Oh, and you also have to know how to swim.) The Museum Mile Festival 2011

One day a year, for the past 32 years, nine of the country’s finest museums, all ones that call Fifth Avenue home, collectively open their doors from 6pm – 9pm for free to New Yorkers and visitors for a mile-long block party and visual art celebration. This traffic-free, music- and art-filled celebration fills the street and sidewalks of Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th street, the mile now officially designated as Museum Mile. Over 50,000 visitors attend the festival annually.

Central Park Summer Stage 2011

The 2011 season of SummerStage, New York’s largest free performing arts festival, brings over 100 performances to eighteen parks throughout the five boroughs. With performances ranging from American pop, Latin and world music to dance, spoken word and theater, SummerStage fills a vital niche in New York City’s summer arts festival landscape. Since its inception twenty-six years ago, more than six million people from New York City and around the world have enjoyed SummerStage. The festival runs from June 7th until September 2nd. Discover Brooklyn (Part 1): Coney Island

Coney Island is a peninsula in southernmost Brooklyn, New York City, USA, with a famous beach on the Atlantic Ocean. As the name implies, it is a former island and is partially connected by landfill to the mainland.

The area was a major resort and site of amusement parks that reached its peak during the first half of the 20th century. It declined in popularity after World War II and endured years of neglect. ABOUT HARLEM JAZZ SHRINES FESTIVAL 2011

The Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage and Jazzmobile have partnered specifically to create a resurgence of jazz opportunities in Harlem with this week-long festival. Jazz will be presentedin all its various forms and diverse formats including jazz dance, concert, club, cabaret and dance events. Conceived as an annual offering, Harlem Jazz Shrines will enable the partners to create a dynamic range of programming, highlighting the role that local Harlem venues have played in the development of jazz.

Free Refreshing Summer Options in NYC

Go for a swim in a Dumpster in Midtown Manhattan. Macro-Sea, the company that created last year’s invitation-only Dumpster pools in Brooklyn, has transformed more shipping containers into code-compliant pools, complete with lifeguards, decks, cabanas and portable showers and toilets. Free entry bracelets will be handed out for time slots from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The pools are part of the city’s Summer Streets initiative, which has closed off Park Avenue to motor vehicles from Chambers to 72nd Streets for the next two Saturdays.
